ONE YEAR ON (REFLECTIONS)

It has been one year since this crazy ride began. In late August of last year, I decided to start an Instagram account and blog where I could share my passion for fashion, as well as spread an important message at the same time. For those who are unaware, I started East & West to bridge the gap between the fashion industries of Asia and the West.  My goal was to create a space where I could promote the talented designers of Asia, who are somewhat underestimated by the Western World. I can accomplish this through sharing my personal style and photographs I take on the runway. I was unfamiliar with designers of the region I grew up in, until my first year attending Jakarta Fashion Week (towards the end of 2014). It was there I discovered the amazing talents of Asia’s designers, and my passion for the fashion industry was reignited. This being said, the passion I have for the fashion industry was not the only driving force for me to aspire to become one of the world's most successful and respected style influencers.

My disability was another big reason for me to want to achieve my goals. Having a disability and being in the fashion industry isn’t easy. I thought that if I could reach my goal, I could inspire countless people. Through this, I believe I can show the world that no matter what obstacles one may face in their life, there is nothing they can’t achieve. Most people I've met have sincerely showed their support towards my mission, however, the reactions I received from others were cold. As I attended events, I would be met with awkward looks and hear fellow attendees whisper things, whilst staring at me disapprovingly. A few designers I met would scoff at the idea of me wanting to wear their clothes for my blog, or say things such as, “You? A fashion blogger?” All whilst gazing down at my wheelchair.

Situations such as these did not discourage me. They made the fire in my belly burn even stronger as I realized that I had to break down many walls built with discrimination. Despite all this, I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by people who show me their utmost support. I feel extremely lucky to have strong personal relationships with designers and people within the industry who encourage me and keep me going by reminding me why I am doing all of this.

When this all began, I wasn’t sure how successful I would become within the fashion industry. However, with one year in, there is one thing I am sure of. I am sure that I will never give up on my dreams. I will aspire to create positive change within one of the world's most superficial industries, for both the designers of Asia, and for those who feel they can’t achieve their dreams due to the obstacles they face.
